Go Tri Event at Rothwell Leisure Centre

Friday the 7 August was a stunning sunny day for the first GO TRI Leeds event at Rothwell Leisure Centre. The Sport and Active Lifestyles team worked in partnership with British Triathlon, Leeds BMX Club and the Community Committee to deliver a truly inclusive Triathlon event. GO TRI is a fun way to access triathlon for the first time. Participants join in swim, cycle or run training sessions or take part in their very first triathlon event.PopUp Triathlon

On offer were three distances for young people to ”GIVE IT A GO” at Swim – Bike – Run to emulate the Brownlee brothers. The event saw an indoor swim and a grass track bike and run. Bikes were provided by Leeds BMX Club and marshals from England Triathlon and Run Leeds. Each participant received a goody bag on completion of the GO TRI which contained information on how they may access Wakefield Triathlon Club as a junior and details of the new sessions starting at Rothwell Leisure Centre in September.

Michelle Scott (England Triathlon) Commented – “ It’s a wonderful day for young people to try Triathlon for free with so many happy faces having fun taking part in sport”.

Rachel Ashcroft (Parent) – “Thank you so much for organising today’s event. My daughter Anna was terrified, literally shaking, when she arrived, but then did brilliantly, and more importantly was incredibly proud of herself. She’ll never be a prize winner but she’s asked me if she can try another triathlon must have taken a lot of organisation to set it all up, but we’re very grateful.”

Neil Jones (Active Sport Officer) “The funding provided for the event by community committees (Outer South) was crucial to allow young people to see what Triathlon is all about and allows us to spring board some new regular sessions from Rothwell Leisure Centre. This is so important with the Triathlon World Series coming to Roundhay Park in June next year and we can start to build a legacy from the outset.”

Over 50 young people registered for the event with some trying the sport for the very first time below are a snap shot of the results.
