Old Leos Cricket have recently been awarded £1457.00 to set up a new junior cricket section. The club, based in Alwoodley, already have senior teams who play in the Wetherby League, but are now working hard to re-establish junior cricket, initially for 7- 11 years.
The project is being led by Nick Boyes, Junior Co-ordinator at Old Leos CC with support from the Council’s Sport and Active Lifestyle Officers, YCB Regional Development Manager and the School Games Organiser for the area.
The funding, which has been awarded by the Outer North East Community Committee, will enable the club to pay for venue hire at the nearest available indoor facility, coaching costs delivered by a Level 3 qualified coach, training equipment for the newly planned sessions and to train up club volunteers to assist in the delivery of the junior coaching programme.
The breakdown of costs is as follows:
Venue for the 8 x 90min weekly sessions @ £29ph (+vat)
1 x paid ECB level 3 coach for 8 x 90 min weekly sessions @ £25ph
1 x ECB level 2 coaching course (for club member)
2 x ECB Coach Support Worker Courses (for club member/parent) @ £60 each
Training equipment for Junior sessions
The club have also approached and met with local schools to offer free coaching, between February and March. Four schools have accepted the offer and times and dates are currently being agreed. This has been made possible through funding from the Yorkshire Cricket Board and is an initiative aimed at increasing participation and generating more interest in junior and youth cricket.
